· Track record smashed again
· Just 0.170 covers top four in FP3
· Gasly’s ghastly weekend continues
Mexico City, Mex. – Saturday’s one-hour qualifying session should be a stunning spectacle after the final Formula 1 free practice saw the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez track record obliterated.
Max Verstappen was the man who did it for Red Bull with a best lap of 1 minute 17.113 seconds three-quarters of the way through the one-hour final practice, but Mercedes and Ferrari are both firmly in the fight.
Lewis Hamilton was second for the third session in a row for the Silver Arrows, just 0.075 slower than the Dutchman, with Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari in close pursuit another 0.042 behind.
Mexico’s Checo Perez was an excellent seventh and briefly topped the times early in the session, but he incurred the wrath of Haas’s Romain Grosjean when his Force India almost came to a halt in the Foro Sol section of the track.
‘He can’t do that!’ yelled the Frenchman, who was desperate to make up for a very difficult Friday., finishing 17th.
Pierre Gasly had another disastrous session in his #10 Toro Rosso, stopping when smoke belched from the rear of the car just three minutes after the start. Complex instructions on re-starting had no effect. ‘It doesn’t work’, he says – and neither did the Monaco driver this morning.
But new teammate Brendon Hartley continued his excellent start to his F1 career with 11th place.
