F1 speeding up
All changes implemented by Formula 1 on its technical regulations in order to speed up the queen category for the current season, are finally paying off.
Within the 10 Grand Prix managed in the present campaign, pole position records and fastest lap times have been improved.
In Great Britain, Lewis Hamilton improved for almost five seconds the best lap time; while in China, the British driver fell almost four seconds of the pole time achieved by Nico Rosberg in 2016.
If this tendency continues, the Formula 1 Gran Premio de México will definitely witness the highest speeds of the calendar.
In 2016, at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, the Finnish Valtteri Bottas reached the highest speed of 372.5 kph on a straight, leaving behind the 366.8 kph of speed once reached by the Venezuelan, Pastor Maldonado in 2015 at Formula 1 Gran Premio de México, which was also the highest speed of that season.
Bottas finished only one sigh away from breaking the historical top speed record of 372.6 kph gotten on F1 Grand Prix, scored by Juan Pablo Montoya, winner of Monza, Italy in 2005.
Unofficially, in 2016 at European Formula 1 Grand Prix, Bottas got head to head with a Williams at a full speed of 378 kph on the street circuit of Baku, according to information in hands of the British team itself. The International Automobile Federation (FIA) did not support Bottas’ record got by then on the Azerbaijan layout.
Changes on F1 regulations were implemented in order to reduce times from three to five seconds per lap, for the racing cars to reach a higher speed on the curves and to exhibit a more aggressive design.
In 2014, the highest category experienced one of its deepest transformations on its entire history, by introducing turbo hybrid V6 power units.
For this season, front spoilers increased from 1,650 meters to 1,800; as for the rear wings they decreased in height but increased in width to provide the car with a highest level in aerodynamics.
The car weight increased to 728 kg to compensate for heavier wheels. The front wheels went from 245 millimeters of 2016 to 305 mm this year; while rear wheels increased their last season width from 325 mm to 405 mm in 2017.
Although top speed records have not fallen into the present campaign, the layout features in Magdalena Mixhuca could affect category queen on getting a new historical record.
The Hermanos Rodríguez is the circuit with the highest altitude above the sea (2 thousand 240 meters), and consequently cars will face a lower air resistance; also low atmospheric pressure will not affect power units due to the turbocharger.
Therefore, the Formula 1 Gran Premio de México aims to become the race with the highest speed of the season again, having also the conditions for a new historical record to be set.
